Maldives

Atoll resorts and overwater suites — the global benchmark for water-villa luxury.

Best time: November–April Seven nights at a single atoll resort.

The Maldives view

One product, done at extraordinary scale

The Maldives is a single product done at extraordinary scale — the overwater villa. The right resort is everything; the wrong one is a long flight to nothing special. The atoll geography (1,200 islands across 26 atolls) means every property is a private island, and the difference between resorts is genuinely the difference between trips. The top tier is small and well-defined: the Soneva Fushi and Soneva Jani for sustainable barefoot luxury, the Cheval Blanc Randheli for design-led French polish, the Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru for the marine-biology programme, the Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi for the largest villa product, and the new Patina and Joali for design-forward second-trip alternatives. Atoll choice matters too — Baa for whale shark snorkelling, North Malé for the shortest transfer, Raa and Noonu for the quietest new openings. The season is sharp: November through April is the dry-season working window with the calmest seas and clearest water; May through October is the wet season with afternoon storms and 30–40% off rates (a fair trade for travellers who don't mind the occasional rainy day). Plan seven nights minimum at a single resort — the transfer logistics and the slow-build resort programming both reward staying put.

Who it's for

The Maldives is the right answer for the seven-night, single-resort, switch-everything-off honeymoon or anniversary trip. Less ideal as a multi-stop itinerary; the country is a chain of resort islands, and resort-hopping is logistically brutal. Pick the one resort properly and let it be the trip.

Getting there

How to land well

Malé (MLE) is the only international airport — Emirates, Qatar, Singapore, Etihad and Turkish all run strong business class in. From Malé, your resort handles the onward transfer: seaplane (TMA, Manta Air, daylight only) for atolls within 90 minutes, or a domestic flight plus speedboat for the further reaches (Raa, Noonu, Gaafu). Never buy your own onward leg.

Dry season — the headline window. Christmas and New Year book a year out.

  • Off-season

Wet season — afternoon storms, half-price rooms.

The Maldives runs on a single dry-and-wet calendar. November through April is the dry window — the headline season, with Christmas and New Year at peak (book a year out) and Chinese New Year close behind. February and March are the genuine sweet spot — driest weather, calmest seas, full villa availability. May through October is the southwest monsoon — daily afternoon storms, surf chop on the western atolls, and rates 30–50% off if you don't mind the rhythm. November and late April are the underrated transition weeks.
