United Kingdom

United Kingdom

Mayfair hotels, country house stays, and the new wave of British boutique.

Best time: May–September Two nights in a Mayfair townhouse hotel, then a Cotswolds stately stay.

The British case

Town and country, done properly

The UK luxury scene is split between grande-dame London hotels and a quietly excellent country-house circuit. We cover both, sceptically — London's headline rooms (Claridge's, the Connaught, the Berkeley, the Savoy, the Lanesborough, the Peninsula) genuinely deserve their reputations, but the rate-to-experience math drops fast outside the top tier, and the city's mid-luxury layer is patchier than it looks. The country-house circuit is the editor's secret — Heckfield Place in Hampshire, the Newt in Somerset, Cliveden, Lime Wood in the New Forest, and a small bench of Scottish lodges (Gleneagles, Schloss Roxburghe, the Fife Arms). A first UK trip pairs three or four nights in London with three at one country house; a return adds Edinburgh, the Cotswolds, or a Scottish Highlands week (Skye, Royal Deeside, the Cairngorms). The weather and the calendar both reward the May–October window; July and August are the British peak with the highest London rates. Plan ten nights for a London-plus-country-house trip; book Claridge's and Heckfield six to eight months ahead for prime dates, and remember the Wimbledon and Chelsea Flower Show weeks (late May, early July) lock out almost every headline London room.

Who it's for

The UK suits travellers who like grande-dame service in town and a stately country-house weekend to follow — and who are content paying London rates for the privilege. Less ideal if you need reliable summer weather; even July hedges its bets.

Getting there

How to land well

London Heathrow (LHR) is the long-haul gateway; British Airways, Virgin, and the US carriers all run strong business products in. For Scotland, the LNER train from London King's Cross to Edinburgh is four and a half hours and dramatically more pleasant than flying. The Cotswolds are 90 minutes by car from Heathrow — skip the central London hotel night if the country house is the point.

  • Peak

Long days, full hotels, the country-house circuit at its busiest.

  • Shoulder

Long enough days, light enough hotels — the right window.

  • Off-season

Cold, dark, but cosy — country-house stays at their winter best.

May to September is the working window; June and September are the editor's pick. Country-house weekends in winter (with a fire and a bottle) are quietly the best value of the year.

Britain, practically

What we get asked before every trip

Since early 2025 visitors from the US, EU, Canada, Australia, NZ and most other Western countries need a UK ETA — £10 online, valid two years. Apply 72 hours before you fly; approvals usually arrive within minutes. Long-stay, work or study still needs the consular visa route.
