Thailand

The global benchmark for resort wellness — and it shows in the prices.

Best time: November–March Five nights at a wellness resort in Phuket, two at a Bangkok skyline hotel.

The Thai case

The benchmark for resort wellness

Thailand still offers the best resort-to-rate ratio in Asia. The trick is the property, the season, and the right region — Bangkok for two or three city nights, Phuket and Phang Nga Bay for the Andaman Sea resorts, Koh Samui and the Gulf islands for the alternative beach calendar, and Chiang Mai or the Golden Triangle for a forest-and-elephant finish. The luxury ground game runs deep. The Mandarin Oriental Bangkok and the Peninsula remain the city benchmarks; the Rosewood, Capella, and Four Seasons Chao Phraya have all opened or refreshed in the last few years. On the Andaman coast, Six Senses Yao Noi, Amanpuri, Soneva Kiri, and Rosewood Phuket sit at the top tier. The Chiang Mai Four Seasons and Anantara Golden Triangle handle the northern leg. The season is split: November through April is the Andaman dry season (Phuket, Krabi, Phang Nga); the Gulf islands (Koh Samui) flip the calendar with their best months May through September. The editor's window for a country-wide trip is November–February, when both coasts work and Bangkok is at its coolest. Plan twelve days minimum; the country rewards the slow build.

Who it's for

Thailand is the right call for travellers who want serious wellness, beach time, and exceptional value at the top end. Less ideal if you want quiet, undiscovered Asia — the country has been on the luxury map for thirty years and the famous resorts run busy.

Getting there

How to land well

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the long-haul gateway; Thai Airways, Singapore, and Qatar all run strong business products in. For Phuket or Koh Samui, take the domestic onward — Bangkok Airways and Thai both run reliable hourly services. The new high-speed rail to the southern coast is improving but not yet a serious option for luxury travellers.

  • Peak

Dry, warm, and the most expensive booking window.

  • Shoulder

Heat building (Mar) or rains easing (Nov) — value increases sharply.

  • Off-season

Green-season rains; resorts run promotions and stay surprisingly enjoyable.

November through early March is the prime window — dry, warm, and reliable. The most underrated month is November: the rains have just stopped, hotels are at shoulder rates, and the calendar is light.
