Indonesia
Bali villas, Lombok beaches, and the last truly quiet luxury island.
The Indonesia view
Bali is the headline; the archipelago is the trip
Bali is the headline; the rest of the archipelago is where the genuine quiet is. We cover both, with a strong bias for the road less travelled — the southern Bali resort strip (Seminyak, Canggu, Ubud) is the entry point, but the smarter trip routes through Sumba (Nihi), the Gilis, Lombok, or the Komodo islands by phinisi yacht for the second leg. The headline Bali rooms split between the cliff-top southern resorts (Bulgari, Six Senses Uluwatu, Four Seasons Jimbaran), the Ubud jungle properties (Como Shambhala, Mandapa, Four Seasons Sayan), and a small handful of design boutiques (Katamama, the Slow). Outside Bali, Nihi Sumba remains the singular flagship — a 27-villa resort on a wild surfing coast that has topped most luxury indexes for a decade. The season runs April through October (dry season) for the south and west; the eastern islands (Sumba, Komodo) work May through October. November through March is the wet season — afternoon storms, lower rates, but a real risk of rain-out for Komodo phinisi cruises specifically. Plan ten to fourteen days for a Bali-plus-second-island trip; the inter-island flight schedule (Garuda, Wings Air) deserves an extra buffer day.
Indonesia suits travellers who want serious wellness, design-led villa stays, and a country where every island has its own tempo. Less ideal if you want fast-paced city travel — Jakarta is what you fly through, not what you fly for. Bali specifically is for the slow week, not the four-day stop.
How to land well
Bali (DPS) is the obvious entry — Singapore Airlines, Garuda, Qatar and Emirates all serve it well in business. For Jakarta-first travellers, Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) connects to every regional hop. Inside Bali, hire a private driver (IDR 700,000–1,000,000 per day with car). For the Gilis or Lombok, the Bluewater fast boat is the right call; for Sumba or Flores, fly Garuda or Wings Air.

Dry and green, year-round
When the islands actually open up
- Peak
Dry, warm, and the most over-booked window.
- Shoulder
Rice terraces still green from the rains, surf clean on the Bukit, ceremony calendar in full swing across Bali.
- Off-season
Tropical downpours by 3pm most days, rice paddies at their most photogenic, villa rates 30–40% off.
Indonesia's working window is April through October — dry, warm, with the rice terraces still green from the recent rains in May and June. July and August are peak; ceremony calendars are at full tilt and rates climb. November through March is the green season — daily afternoon downpours, surf chop, and villa rates 30–40% off if you don't mind the rhythm. The genuine sweet spot is May or September.
