The Lucalvry view
Lombok is what Bali was twenty years ago — quieter beaches, fewer hotels, and the Gili Islands a short boat ride away. The luxury scene is tiny but real (Aman, Oberoi), and the south coast around Kuta Lombok has become Indonesia's most interesting new surf-luxury frontier.
Four to five nights is the right length, often paired with Bali.
Lombok is Bali's quieter, drier, more Muslim-majority neighbour — a 30-minute flight or 90-minute fast-boat east — and the island most often suggested as the Bali-without-the-crowds alternative. The reality is more nuanced. Senggigi (the original west-coast resort strip) is faded and largely skippable. Kuta Lombok and the Mandalika peninsula on the south coast is the new development zone — the new Pullman Mandalika, the Mövenpick, the Red Bull–branded Mandalika Hotel, and the upgraded MotoGP street circuit running annually since 2021 — and runs at a midmarket-to-upper-midmarket tier. The genuine luxury cluster is concentrated on the small Gili islands offshore (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno, Gili Air) and at a handful of north-coast properties (Tugu Lombok, the Oberoi Lombok, Hotel Tugu).
The Gili islands deserve their own decision. Gili Trawangan is the largest and the party island — bicycle and horse-cart only, no motorised vehicles, a beach-bar strip running the south coast. Gili Air is the middle ground — quieter, with the most refined dive operators (Manta Dive, Blue Marlin) and the best small-villa cluster. Gili Meno is the honeymoon island — the smallest, the quietest, and the one with the underwater sculpture installations off the western shore. Pick one; do not try to hop in 48 hours.
Mount Rinjani is the island's geographic anchor and a serious trekking proposition. The 3,726m volcano (the second-highest in Indonesia) is climbable on 2-day or 3-day organised treks from the village of Senaru on the north flank — €250–450 per person with porters and guides — and rewards genuinely fit trekkers with one of the great crater-lake summit sunrises in Asia. Booked through agencies in Senaru, not online aggregators.
Season is sharper than Bali. May through September is the dry window and the absolute peak — the Rinjani treks operating, the Gili island visibility at 25m+ for diving. October through April is the wet season, with the catch that Rinjani treks are largely closed (heavy rain, dangerous landslides) and Gili boat crossings are occasionally cancelled by sea state. The most common Lombok mistake is treating it as a one-night Bali side trip; four nights is the floor for any combination of the south coast plus a Gili stay.
The practical Lombok question is always: where do you actually base? The Mandalika resort cluster on the south coast (around Kuta Lombok and Tanjung Aan) is where the new luxury (Pullman, Novotel, the upcoming Aman) is concentrating — empty white-sand bays, the new MotoGP circuit nearby, but no walkable village. The Senggigi strip on the west coast is the older tourism belt, more developed but tired. The Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, Air) are 30 minutes by fast boat off the northwest coast — Meno is the honeymoon-quiet pick, Trawangan the party, Air the balance — and they're worth two or three nights tacked onto a Lombok stay rather than treated as the main base. The drive from Lombok International Airport to the south-coast resorts is 25 minutes; to Senggigi 90 minutes; to the Gili boat departure point at Bangsal 2 hours.
