The original 'no news, no shoes' Maldivian resort — Kunfunadhoo Island in Baa Atoll, with the densest activity programme of any luxury island stay.

What works

  • Six restaurants — actual dinner variety on a 10-night stay
  • Astronomy, marine biology, and chocolate room programmes
  • Beach villas larger than most overwater suites

Watch-outs

  • Seaplane connection mandatory
  • All-inclusive packages aggressively priced

Soneva Fushi sits on Kunfunadhoo, a 1.5-kilometre-long island in Baa Atoll — the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the central-northern Maldives, 35 minutes by Trans Maldivian Airways seaplane from Velana International. The island runs the largest plot-per-villa ratio in the country (one villa per 7,000 square metres of land) and the no-shoes, no-news policy means guests are met at the seaplane jetty, asked to put their shoes in a cotton bag, and reunited with them only on departure. The 65-square-kilometre Hanifaru Bay manta-ray and whale-shark aggregation site is a 25-minute boat ride and operates only between June and November under a strict 80-swimmer-per-day government cap.

Sonu Shivdasani and his wife Eva opened Soneva Fushi in 1995 as the first barefoot-luxury Maldives resort, and the original architectural language — driftwood, palm-thatch, raw Indonesian teak, locally-fired bricks — defines the design vocabulary that almost every subsequent Maldivian resort has copied. The villas are categorised by footprint and beach orientation rather than reef quality (every villa is on a reef-edge); the most useful upgrade is the slide added to the two-bedroom Crusoe Residences for families with under-12s, and the only category genuinely worth the jump from a one-bedroom Crusoe Villa with Pool is the Soneva Fushi Family Villa Suite for groups of six or more.

The food programme is the deepest in the Maldives — six year-round restaurants plus the November-to-April Out of the Blue pop-up — and the only Maldivian property where dietary restrictions are accommodated at every dining outlet rather than at a designated kitchen. Fresh in the Garden (the organic-garden tasting menu, twice weekly), So Hands On (the chef-driven counter inside the food forest), and Out of the Blue's overwater chef's table are the headline rooms; the daily-changing By the Beach lunch service is the casual default. The chocolate-and-cheese rooms are open 24 hours; both are included on the full-board and half-board meal plans.

Soneva sits outside any hotel chain points programme. The booking strategy is direct via the Soneva website or through a Soneva-recognised travel partner — both pay the same nightly rate, but partner bookings add the Soneva Unlimited Experiences package (free transfer for stays of seven nights or more, complimentary excursion credit, and dining included on bookings made 60 days in advance). The island operates year-round, but Hanifaru Bay manta season (June through November) overlaps the south-west monsoon — for swimming and dive visibility, the December-to-April dry window is the booking to make, and February is structurally the lowest-rain month of the calendar.

Who it's for
