Arusha

Arusha

The arrival town — one-night stopover before flying onward.

The Lucalvry view

Arusha is the launching pad for almost every Tanzanian safari — the city sits at 1,400m below the southern slopes of Mount Meru, an hour from Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO), and it exists, for the modern luxury traveller, primarily to absorb a single overnight before the dawn light-aircraft hop into the Serengeti or Ngorongoro. The right approach is to skip downtown Arusha entirely and book the lodge-style outliers in the coffee-plantation belt to the south — Gran Meliá Arusha, Legendary Lodge, the Arusha Coffee Lodge — where the air is cool, the gardens are green, and the safari briefing happens on a verandah rather than a hotel ballroom.

A single transit night is the standard. Two nights make sense if you're arriving on a long-haul red-eye and want a genuine recovery day, or if you want to fold in the Maasai cultural day-tour, the Tengeru market, or the Mount Meru lower-slope walk. Beyond that, the city itself offers little; the headline is the safari, and Arusha's job is to deliver you to it rested.

Neighborhoods

Where to base yourself

  • Coffee Plantation Belt (south of city)

    Stay here

The luxury anchor — coffee estates turned into garden lodges, 20–30 minutes from the airport, the proper safari-prelude atmosphere.

  • Usa River

Halfway between Arusha and Kilimanjaro Airport — the easiest base for a late arrival or early departure, with garden lodges along the river.

  • Downtown Arusha

The functional city — the central market, the Tanzanite museum, the Maasai craft cooperative — useful for a daytime errand but not for sleeping.

  • Mount Meru Slopes

Higher and cooler — Hatari Lodge and the Meru-side outliers — for travellers wanting to add a Meru lower-slope walk or a longer reset before the bush.

Hotels

Where to stay

  • Gran Meliá Arusha

Spanish-luxury group's 2022 opening — 90 rooms in coffee-plantation gardens, the smartest new safari-prelude room in northern Tanzania.

    $$$$
  • Legendary Lodge

Twelve 1920s coffee-estate cottages on a working plantation — owned by Asilia, the safari-camp-style anchor for first-night unwind.

    $$$$
  • Arusha Coffee Lodge

30 plantation chalets at the city's southern edge — the most reliable mid-luxe pick, with the Shanga social-enterprise glassworks on site.

    $$$
  • Onsea House

Belgian-Tanzanian boutique on the Mount Meru slopes — six rooms, exceptional kitchen (Belgian chef-owner), the gourmet pick.

    $$$
  • The Highlands by Asilia

Domed tented camp at 2,500m on the Ngorongoro highlands — useful as a one-night Arusha-to-Serengeti midpoint stop, not a city base.

    $$$$

Dining

Where to eat

  • Onsea House restaurant

Five-course tasting menus in the converted farmhouse dining room — the city's only genuinely fine-dining option, book ahead.

    $$$$
  • Fifi's Restaurant

The expat-locals lunch institution on India Street — wood-fired pizza, salads, the right midday stop if you're errand-running in town.

    $$
  • George's Tavern

Coffee Plantation pub-restaurant — the place for a casual safari-pre or post-trip dinner without leaving the lodge belt.

    $$
  • Lodge dining

Gran Meliá and Legendary Lodge both run full-board options that are genuinely better than venturing out for a one-night stop.

An ideal day

What to do

  1. Morning

Sleep in, breakfast on the lodge verandah, light walk through the coffee plantation with a guide explaining the picking and processing.

  2. Late morning

Optional Cultural Heritage Centre visit (15 minutes from the lodge belt) — the gallery and Tanzanite museum are genuinely worthwhile.

  3. Lunch

Long lunch back at the lodge or at Fifi's in town.

  4. Afternoon

Spa treatment, pool time, or a short Meru lower-slope walk for travellers needing more activity. The safari briefing usually happens at 5pm.

  5. Evening

Early dinner at the lodge, packing checklist (15kg soft-sided luggage limit for the bush flight), early bed before the dawn departure.

Logistics

Getting around

Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the long-haul gateway, 50km east of Arusha — KLM, Qatar, Emirates, Ethiopian, and Turkish all run reliable widebody service. Arusha's small Arusha Airport (ARK) handles the light-aircraft hops to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro on Coastal Aviation, Auric Air, and Regional Air; flights are 60–90 minutes, weight-restricted to 15kg of soft-sided luggage. All hotel transfers are pre-arranged through the lodge — driving yourself in Arusha is unwise and unnecessary. The road from JRO to the lodge belt takes 60–90 minutes depending on traffic.

FAQ

Common questions about Arusha

Do I need to overnight in Arusha?
Almost always yes — the international long-haul flights into JRO arrive late evening, and the bush-flight network only operates during daylight. A one-night Arusha stop is standard. The exception is travellers connecting through Dar es Salaam to the southern circuit.
JRO or Dar — which airport?
JRO for the northern circuit (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire, Manyara) — your light-aircraft transfer leaves from Arusha. DAR (Dar es Salaam) for the southern circuit (Ruaha, Nyerere/Selous) and for Zanzibar — both have light-aircraft service from DAR. Some travellers fly into JRO and out of DAR via Zanzibar.
How early should I leave for the airport?
From the coffee-plantation belt, allow 75 minutes for JRO transfers (it's 50km on a single highway). Bush flights from Arusha Airport (ARK) leave at 7am or 7.30am sharp — leave the lodge no later than 6.15am. The lodges all run their own transfer programme.
Is Arusha safe?
The lodge belt and the airport corridor are safe with normal precautions. Downtown Arusha after dark requires care — pickpocketing on the central market streets is common, and the standard advice is to stay in a vehicle or with a guide. The luxury circuit avoids these zones entirely.
Tanzanite — buy it here?
Yes, but only at the Cultural Heritage Centre or Tanzanite Experience showrooms in Arusha — these are vetted and certified. Avoid street touts and informal markets entirely; the synthetics and misrepresentations are widespread. Expect to pay 30–50% less than equivalent stones at home.
