Two weeks, the right circuit
Tanzania is the deepest safari trip on the continent — Serengeti vastness, Ngorongoro density, and a Zanzibar coast at the end that genuinely earns its place in the itinerary. Plan two weeks; ten days is the minimum that doesn't feel rushed and a single-week 'highlights' trip is a routing mistake. The ground game splits between the headline operators (Singita, &Beyond, Sanctuary, Asilia) and a handful of independent camps that are quietly best-in-class. Northern circuit (Serengeti–Ngorongoro–Tarangire) for first-timers; southern circuit (Ruaha, Selous/Nyerere) for return visits and travellers who want the wilder, less-trafficked alternative.
Tanzania rewards travellers who'll commit two weeks, treat the safari camps as the headline (not a checkbox), and finish with three nights minimum on Zanzibar. Less ideal for travellers who want a quick one-week safari hit — Kenya's tighter geography is the better answer for that brief.
How to land well
Kilimanjaro (JRO) for the northern circuit, Dar es Salaam (DAR) for southern circuit and Zanzibar — KLM, Qatar, Emirates, and Ethiopian all run reliable widebody service. From Arusha or Dar, light-aircraft transfers (Coastal, Auric Air) handle the camp-to-camp hops; flights are weight-restricted and weather-dependent. Plan an Arusha or Dar overnight on arrival.

Reading the wildebeest calendar
- Peak
Dry season — peak game viewing, peak rates, book a year ahead for Singita.
- Shoulder
Calving season is excellent for the southern Serengeti and far less crowded.
- Off-season
Long rains close many camps; the green season is wonderful for photography if you accept the mud.
June through October is the dry-season headline window — peak game viewing across the northern circuit, peak rates, and the Mara River crossings in August–September. The editor's secret is the calving season (late January through March) in the southern Serengeti, when newborn wildebeest concentrate predator activity and the camps run materially cheaper. April and May (the long rains) close many properties; November's short rains are a quiet sweet spot for travellers who don't mind brief afternoon showers.
