Moorea

Moorea

Quieter than Bora, dramatic peaks, the better dive sites.

The Lucalvry view

Moorea is Bora Bora's quieter, more dramatic sister — a heart-shaped volcanic island 17 km off Tahiti, with the same lagoon turquoise but a more vertical interior, better hiking, and snorkelling-and-diving variety that out-performs Bora's sheltered lagoon. The luxury options are smaller and more boutique: the Hilton Moorea, the Sofitel Moorea Ia Ora Beach Resort, and the InterContinental Moorea Resort & Spa, with overwater bungalows at all three at meaningfully kinder rates than Bora Bora.

The right Moorea trip is paired — three or four nights at a resort plus the dramatic interior loop drive (Belvedere Lookout, the pineapple plantations, Cook's Bay), with a half-day swimming with humpback whales between July and October. Five to seven nights as a standalone is plenty; alternatively, pair Moorea with Bora Bora as a one-week double-island trip — the 30-minute Air Tahiti hop makes the routing genuinely simple.

An ideal day

What to do

  1. Morning

Half-day swim with humpback whales (July–October only) — regulated 6-person boats from Hauru Point, the most extraordinary marine encounter available in French Polynesia.

  2. Late morning

Drive the interior loop — Belvedere Lookout, the agricultural lyceum tropical-fruit tasting, the Opunohu archaeological site.

  3. Lunch

Beach lunch at Snack Mahana on the Hauru Point shore — poisson cru, beer, the swim afterward. The island's defining meal.

  4. Afternoon

Snorkel safari from the resort — Tiki Village shark-and-ray sandbar (Hauru Point) or the Sofitel coral garden (Temae). 90 minutes, in shallow water.

  5. Evening

Sunset at the Hilton overwater bar with the Bora Bora silhouette on the western horizon, then dinner at Le Mahogany.

Logistics

Getting around

Moorea Airport (MOZ) sits on the north coast 5 minutes from the Sofitel and 25 minutes from Hauru Point. Most travellers arrive via the 30-minute Air Tahiti flight from Papeete (€60 one-way, multiple daily) or the 30-minute Aremiti or Terevau ferry from Papeete (€20, with vehicle option). Hire a car at the airport for the interior loop drive and the cross-island restaurants — Avis and Europcar both operate on the island, with rates around €70/day. The 60 km coast road circumnavigates the island in 90 minutes of driving. Resort shuttles handle the transfers, but rental freedom transforms a Moorea stay.

FAQ

Common questions about Moorea

Bora Bora or Moorea?
Bora Bora for the headline overwater experience and the most polished resorts; Moorea for the better diving, lower prices (often 40% less for similar overwater inventory), more dramatic interior, and the humpback whale season. The right answer for first-time French Polynesia is one Bora Bora week; the right answer for a return visit, or a budget-conscious first trip, is Moorea.
Best time to visit Moorea?
May to October is the dry-season working window — calm seas, low humidity, the clearest lagoon water of the year. July through October is the humpback whale season, which is genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime experience and worth weighting the trip toward. May, June, September, and October are the editor's months — same weather, kinder rates, no peak surge.
Can you really swim with humpback whales?
Yes — Moorea is one of the few places in the world with regulated, in-water humpback whale encounters during the July–October migration. The boats are 6-person maximums, the operators are licensed (Moorea Mahana Tours, Dr. Michael Poole), and the encounters happen at distance with the whales' consent. The most extraordinary marine experience available in French Polynesia, and a powerful argument for choosing Moorea over Bora Bora.
How many nights in Moorea?
Three to four nights as part of a multi-island French Polynesia trip; five to seven as a standalone. The interior loop drive is a half-day, the snorkel and dive sites need three or four boat days, and the whale-swim window (in season) takes one full day. Pair with Bora Bora for a one-week double-island trip if your routing allows.
Is the ferry from Tahiti worth taking?
If you're planning to drive on Moorea, yes — the 30-minute Aremiti or Terevau ferry from Papeete (€20 passenger, €60 with car) lets you bring your own rental and avoid the hassle of arranging a car on Moorea. For non-drivers, the 30-minute Air Tahiti flight from PPT is the smoother choice and often comparably priced.
