Nadi

Nadi

The arrival point — one night maximum, then onward.

The Lucalvry view

Nadi is Fiji's gateway, not its destination — the international airport (NAN) sits 9 km from the town, with every Yasawa, Mamanuca, and Vanua Levu connection routing through here. The right Nadi stay is one transit night at a Denarau Island resort, then onward by seaplane, helicopter, or speedboat the next morning. The smarter Denarau base for a one-night arrival is the Sheraton Resort & Spa or the Sofitel Fiji — both walking-distance to the marina where the morning Yasawa transfers depart.

Don't be tempted to extend the Nadi stay beyond a transit night unless you genuinely only have a long layover. The Coral Coast and Denarau resorts are family-friendly and well-run, but the headline Fiji luxury sits on the outer islands — every additional Nadi night is a missed Vomo or Tokoriki day.

Neighborhoods

Where to base yourself

  • Denarau Island

    Stay here

The hotel-and-marina cluster 20 minutes from the airport — Sheraton, Sofitel, Hilton, the Port Denarau ferry terminal for Yasawa transfers.

  • Nadi town

The administrative town — Sri Siva Subramaniya temple (the largest Hindu temple in the Southern Hemisphere), the Saturday produce market, the local-feel break from resort culture.

  • Wailoaloa Beach

Backpacker-and-mid-tier beach 5 minutes from the airport — quieter than Denarau, the value alternative for a single transit night.

  • Coral Coast (Sigatoka)

60 minutes east of Nadi — InterContinental Fiji, Outrigger Fiji, the surf breaks of Sigatoka. The mainland alternative to outer-island routing.

Hotels

Where to stay

  • Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort, Denarau

The reliable transit base — beach-front pool, Port Denarau marina 5 minutes' walk, the morning ferry connection.

    $$$
  • Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa, Denarau

Adults-only Waitui Beach Club within the family resort — the polished pre-flight option.

    $$$
  • Hilton Fiji Beach Resort & Spa

All-suite Denarau resort with the largest pool deck on the island — strong-value for a multi-night stay if onward routing is delayed.

    $$$
  • InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa, Coral Coast

The mainland-luxury answer 90 minutes east of Nadi — beach-front, championship golf, the strongest Coral Coast property.

    $$$

Dining

Where to eat

  • Indigo, Port Denarau

Indo-Fijian fusion at the marina — kokoda (Fijian raw fish), curry, the strongest non-resort dinner in Nadi.

    $$
  • Bonefish Seafood Restaurant

Local-favourite fish kitchen 10 minutes from the airport — walu (Spanish mackerel), kokoda, the pre-flight value pick.

  • Saffron Tandoori, Nadi town

Long-running Indian institution — North Indian curries and tandoori, €12 for a full meal.

  • Resort dining (Sheraton, Sofitel, Hilton)

All three Denarau resorts have multiple restaurants — assume the resort is your dinner if you arrive late and fly out early.

An ideal day

What to do

  1. Arrival

Resort transfer to Denarau (20 minutes), check-in, beach swim and a pool drink — keep the day low-impact for the inevitable jet lag.

  2. Late afternoon

Walk to Port Denarau marina, sundowner at Cardo's or Bonefish — the marina is the only meaningful evening promenade in greater Nadi.

  3. Evening

Resort dinner or a short taxi to Indigo at Port Denarau — keep it early, the morning ferry to the Yasawas departs by 9 am.

  4. Morning

Resort breakfast, transfer to Port Denarau or to the seaplane terminal — Turtle Airways and Pacific Island Air both fly direct to private-island resorts.

Logistics

Getting around

Nadi International Airport (NAN) is 9 km from Nadi town and 20 minutes from Denarau Island by taxi (FJ$25, around €11). Resort shuttles handle most transfers; otherwise the airport taxi rank is reliable and metered. From Port Denarau marina, the South Sea Cruises and Awesome Adventures ferries connect the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands (4–5 hours one-way to the northern Yasawas). For private-island resorts, the seaplane (Turtle Airways) or helicopter (Island Hoppers, Pacific Island Air) is the standard transfer — booked through the resort, included in higher room categories.

FAQ

Common questions about Nadi

Should I stay in Nadi or transit straight to the islands?
Transit straight to the islands if your inbound flight arrives before 11 am — the morning ferries and seaplanes can connect same-day to most Mamanuca and southern Yasawa resorts. Stay one night in Nadi if your flight lands later, if you have a small child who needs the recovery, or if your onward routing requires the next morning's first departure.
Best time to visit Fiji?
May to October is the dry-season working window. July and August are the absolute peak; the editor's window is May–June and September–October, when the weather is essentially identical and rates are 20–30% kinder. November to April is wet season with cyclone risk; resorts stay open with sharp discounts but the swimming and snorkelling experience compromises.
Denarau or the Coral Coast for a longer stay?
Denarau for the marina-side dining cluster, the family-friendly resort density, and the Yasawa connections. The Coral Coast for the more authentic village setting, the InterContinental, and the surf breaks. Both are 60–90 minutes from Nadi airport; the outer islands beat both on every metric except infrastructure.
Is Nadi safe?
Yes — Fiji is consistently safe for tourists, with the Denarau resort enclave, the Coral Coast, and the outer islands all low-risk. Standard precautions apply for Nadi town at night (poorly-lit streets, occasional opportunistic theft); the resort areas are well-lit and well-patrolled.
How does the seaplane transfer work?
Turtle Airways and Pacific Island Air operate seaplane connections from the Wailoaloa or Denarau bases to private-island resorts (Tokoriki, Vomo, Likuliku, Turtle Island). Flights are 15–45 minutes, daylight only, with strict baggage allowances (15 kg checked, soft bags only). The resort books and confirms the transfer; budget FJ$700–1,500 per person each way for the more remote Yasawa properties.
