Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia

AlUla's Nabatean tombs, Red Sea reefs, and the Gulf's most ambitious new tourism market.

Best time: October–April Three nights in AlUla followed by a Red Sea coast finish.

The Saudi case

AlUla first, the rest builds

Saudi Arabia opened to leisure tourism in 2019 and the luxury market built fast. AlUla is the headline — Nabatean rock-cut tombs at a scale that rivals Petra, with a brand-new resort cluster (Banyan Tree, Habitas, Dar Tantora). Riyadh and the Red Sea coast complete the trip. The ground game is unlike anywhere else in the region — almost everything is less than five years old, the rawi guide programme delivers genuinely educated commentary at Hegra, and the Vision 2030 spending pace means new openings every quarter. A first trip is AlUla-anchored; a return adds the Red Sea or a Riyadh design-and-Diriyah weekend.

Who it's for

Saudi Arabia rewards travellers who want a brand-new luxury circuit, will accept that everything is less than five years old (with all the polish and rough edges that implies), and treat AlUla as the headline rather than Riyadh. The strength is the rawi-guided storytelling and the empty desert — less ideal for travellers who want centuries of layered tourist infrastructure or unrestricted nightlife.

Getting there

How to land well

Riyadh (RUH) and Jeddah (JED) are the long-haul gateways — Saudia, Emirates, Qatar, Lufthansa, and British Airways all run reliable widebody service. From either, internal Saudia flights cover AlUla (UHL — 90 min from Riyadh, 2h from Jeddah) and the Red Sea (RSI — 90 min from Riyadh). The new direct Riyadh–AlUla flight is the standard routing.

  • Peak

Cool winter — ideal for AlUla and Riyadh; book around Winter at Tantora festival rates.

  • Shoulder

Warm but workable; AlUla evenings drop pleasantly.

  • Off-season

Summer is dangerously hot inland; Red Sea coast stays warm but tolerable indoors.

October to April is the working window — daytime temperatures in AlUla and Riyadh in the 22–28°C range, cool desert nights that need a layer, and the Red Sea coast at perfect water temperature. December through February is the absolute peak, anchored by the Winter at Tantora festival in AlUla (typically Dec–Feb); book lodges six months ahead for festival weekends. May to September is dangerously hot inland (45°C+ in Riyadh and AlUla) and only realistic on the Red Sea coast, which stays warm but tolerable for diving and beach days.
