United States

City hotels, desert resorts, and the long road in between.

Best time: April–June, September–October A Manhattan boutique, then three nights in the Utah desert.

The American case

City and wilderness, paired

American luxury is a category of extremes — from the best urban hotels in the world to the deepest desert escapes. We pick our spots carefully because the spread is genuinely vast: New York and Los Angeles compete with London and Paris on the city luxury benchmark; Aspen, Big Sur, and the Napa Valley anchor a small-town high-end resort circuit; and the national-park lodge layer (Amangiri, the Ranch at Rock Creek, Brush Creek) sits in a category most of the world doesn't have. The headline urban rooms are the Mark, the Carlyle, and the new Aman New York; the Hotel Bel-Air and Sunset Tower in LA; the Ritz-Carlton Half Moon Bay and Auberge du Soleil in northern California; the Ritz-Carlton Reynolds Lake Oconee in the south. The wilderness layer is led by Amangiri (Utah), Brush Creek Ranch (Wyoming), and the Ranch at Rock Creek (Montana) — properties that genuinely have no global equivalent. A first US trip is usually New York–LA or New York–Miami; a return adds the wilderness leg. The country is too big for fly-and-drive itineraries beyond a single region — pick one urban corridor (East Coast or West Coast) plus one wilderness leg per trip. Plan twelve to fourteen days minimum.

Who it's for

The US works for travellers who'll plan a city-and-wilderness pairing and accept that domestic flying is part of the deal. Less ideal if you want a single-base trip — the geography is too big to do justice without internal hops.

Getting there

How to land well

JFK and Newark for the East Coast; LAX and SFO for the West. The legacy carriers (Delta, United, American) all run strong business class on long-hauls. For interior resorts, the regional jet from a hub is unavoidable — build in connection time. Private aviation is more common at this end of the market in the US than anywhere else.

  • Peak

NY humid, LA fine, Miami impossible. Holiday weekends spike hotel rates.

  • Shoulder

The widest correct window — usable weather everywhere.

  • Off-season

NY is wonderful in December; Miami flips on (and prices spike).

April–June and September–October are the safest editorial windows for the country as a whole. Each region has a quieter sub-window worth knowing — Utah desert in October, NY in mid-May, Miami in November.

The US, practically

What travellers ask before flying

ESTA pre-authorisation under the Visa Waiver Program for UK, EU, Australian, NZ, Japanese and most other Western passports — $21, two years' validity, apply at least 72 hours before flying. Canadians need no ESTA. Anything beyond 90 days, work, or study needs the consular B-visa or category-specific route.
