Botswana
Okavango water safari, Kalahari salt pans, and the most exclusive bush in Africa.
The Botswana case
The premium safari, properly
Botswana is the highest-end safari destination in Africa — government-managed low-impact licensing keeps camp density minimal and rates premium. The classic trip pairs the Okavango Delta's water-and-land safari with a Kalahari or Linyanti finish, and the right minimum is ten nights. The ground game is dominated by Wilderness Safaris and Great Plains, both genuinely best-in-class, with Natural Selection and andBeyond rounding out the top tier. Mokoro polers, walking safari, night drives, and helicopter scenics are all on the table — Botswana lets you do bush activities that are simply illegal elsewhere on the continent.
Botswana rewards travellers who'll spend serious money for genuinely fewer vehicles per sighting and want the Africa-only experiences (mokoro, walking safari, night drives) that other countries don't permit. The strength is the camp exclusivity — less ideal for budget-conscious travellers or those who want big-five density above all else (Kenya and Tanzania over-deliver there).
How to land well
Maun (MUB) and Kasane (BBK) are the safari gateways — connect via Johannesburg (SAA, Airlink) or Cape Town. From Maun, light-aircraft transfers (Wilderness Air, Mack Air) handle the camp hops; flights are weight-restricted (20kg soft-sided luggage) and run dawn-to-dusk only.

The Delta year
Reading the floodwater
- Peak
Peak dry — game-viewing concentrates around dwindling water sources.
- Shoulder
Cooler shoulder months are exceptional for photography and lighter on bookings.
- Off-season
Green season — lush, baby animals, dramatic skies, rates 40% off.
May through October is the dry season and the headline window — the Delta's floodwaters arrive (counterintuitively, in the dry months) and game concentrates around shrinking water sources. July through September is the absolute peak with the highest game density and the highest rates. May–June and October are quieter shoulder months with excellent light for photography. November to April is the green season — lush, dramatic, baby animals everywhere, and rates 40% lower; the trade-off is some camps close and tracks turn muddy.
